Headcount is a free nightly guessing game. This page says what it keeps about you and why. The short version: there are no accounts, no ads and no tracking, and nothing about you is sold.

What we keep

The name you sign with. You type it in the guestbook at the end. We save it with your night so your score and answer are yours. Other guests see your first name in that night's guestbook, and nothing else about you.

How you played. Your guesses and score for each room.

Your guestbook answer. It goes into the next night's game, mixed in with everyone else's as percentages or an average. Your name is never shown next to it.

Feedback you send. Anything you type or tap in the feedback box, with your name and which screen you were on.

Questions you suggest. If you suggest a question, we keep it with the name you signed with and your phone's random codes, so we know whose friends earned it. If we use it, your first name shows as "Suggested by" on the results screen that night.

Which link brought you. If you came in through one of our links or QR codes (a sticky note, say), we note which one, when you arrived, and whether you finished a game, so we know which ones work. Nothing else is attached to it, not even your name.

Whose shared result brought you. When you share your result or your invite link, the link ends in a short random code for your phone. If a friend opens it, we note that your link brought them, and once they sign the guestbook, the name they signed with. The same goes for anyone they share with. That's how we see how the game spreads from friend to friend. When you tap the share button, we also note your code and the name you signed with. It's never shown to other players.

Spam protection. Your score and guestbook answer are saved with your phone's random code (see below), so nobody else can save over your name that night, and with a scrambled code made from your network's address, so one person can't flood the game with fake answers. The scrambled code can't be turned back into the address, and we only use it to count.

That's all of it. No email, no phone number, no location, no contacts.

What stays on your phone

Your streak, past scores, sound setting, the name you signed with, and a random code that decides which guestbook question you get. These live in your browser's storage. Two go out with what you send: your share code rides along on the links you share, and the random code is saved with your score and guestbook answer (both described above). The rest are never sent to us. (Your phone also remembers which link brought you, so you only count once.) Clear your browser's site data and they're gone (so is your streak).

If you played at our old address (read-the-room-mu.vercel.app), opening it once moves those things over to headcountgame.com inside the link itself. They don't pass through our servers.

Who else handles it

The game runs on Vercel (hosting) and saves the things above with Supabase (the database). The fonts come from Google Fonts, and the small "Vote" badge on the results screen comes from dle.games, a directory of daily games. Like any website, these companies see your IP address and browser type when the page loads, and may keep it in their logs for a while. We don't use them for anything beyond running the game.

No cookies are used for tracking or ads. There are no ads.

Who can play

Headcount isn't meant for kids under 13. If we learn a child under 13 has signed the guestbook, we'll delete what they sent.

Deleting your stuff

Email headcountgame@gmail.com with the name you signed with and roughly when you played, and we'll delete your plays, answers and feedback. Otherwise we keep them while the game is running.

Changes

If what the game keeps ever changes, this page changes first, with a new date at the top.
